In case of emergency: Dial 911
When faced with an emergency requiring the immediate intervention of firefighters, police, or ambulance, dial 911. This service is available free of charge 24/7, for anyone who is in Nova Scotia, even from a public telephone.
When to call 911
Dial 911 if your health, safety, or possessions are threatened and you require immediate assistance. The 911 call taker will notify emergency responders, like fire, police, or ambulance.
When should I not call 911?
If the situation is not an emergency, do not dial 911. 911 staff must be ready to answer emergency calls.
If you mistakenly call 911, do not hang up. Simply tell the person who answers that the call was made by mistake. If you hang up, someone will call you back. If you cannot be reached, emergency services may be sent to your location.
Important information:
- 911 is only for emergencies. For non-emergency situations, contact the appropriate service (police, hospital, etc.).
- When you call 911, remain calm and speak clearly.
- Indicate your precise location (address, landmark).
- Describe the nature of the emergency.
- Follow the dispatcher’s instructions.
- Do not hang up until the dispatcher invites you to do so.
Additional advice:
- Become familiar with the location of public telephones near your residence or place of work.
- Teach your children how to dial 911 in an emergency.
