Get Your Nova Scotia Health Insurance Card (MSI)
In Nova Scotia, taxpayers fund the basic health insurance, called Medical Services Insurance (MSI). Make sure you apply for your health insurance card as soon as you arrive to benefit from free medical and hospital services.
Why should you apply for your MSI card?
- Access to free health care: The MSI card gives you free access to basic medical and hospital services in Nova Scotia.
- Required for treatment: You will need to show your MSI card every time you visit a doctor, hospital, clinic, or any other health service.
- Coverage after arrival: Whether you are immigrating or moving from another Canadian province, MSI coverage generally starts after a waiting period of two months.
How do you obtain your MSI card?
- To obtain a health card in Nova Scotia, you must contact the MSI Registration and Inquiry Department at 902-496-7008 or at 1-800-563-8880 (toll free within Canada) to start the application process. Blank applications are not provided.
- Applications are assessed on an individual basis and proof of citizenship or immigration documentation is required. Once the application is processed, health cards are issued for each family member. You must provide these cards to health care providers before receiving insured health services.

Services not covered and supplementary insurance:
- The MSI card does not cover all services. Prescription drugs, dental care, vision care and certain medical equipment require supplementary insurance.
- Consider private insurance: For these services, you can take out supplementary health insurance with private compagnies.
- Employee benefits: Check if your employer offers group insurance covering these services.
Important Advice:
- Always keep your MSI card with you.
- Check the validity of your card regularly.
- For Canadians from other provinces: If you come from another province, keep your current health insurance coverage until your MSI is activated.
Finding a Doctor
Family doctors are the main point of contact for all your health care needs, at any age. It is therefore crucial to find a family doctor for you and your family upon your arrival in Nova Scotia.
How Can You Find a Family Doctor?
- You can call Healthlink by dialling 811 (available 24/7). The service is in English, but if needed, you can request the assistance of the interpretation service.
