Fishing

Through its history, fishing has been the economic pillar of the Chéticamp region. Its flagship products have historically been cod and lobster. These species not only feed the local population, but helped establish commercial ties to other regions.

Today, the snow crab fishery is particularly productive, making this shellfish a star product of the local industry thanks to worldwide exports from Chéticamp Fisheries, the region’s largest private employer.

The region is also renowned for the social innovation of its fishing cooperatives, which today continue to support local industry and embody the community spirit that characterizes Chéticamp.

Other Sectors

Retail sales account for around 13% of local employment, playing a key role in supporting the local economy and tourism, a sector that is highly developed thanks to the region’s natural beauty and cultural appeal.

Health care is the most significant sector, employing 25% of workers.

This field is essential for meeting community needs and providing the medical services required by residents and visitors alike.

In addition, the construction sector, though more modest in scope, also actively contributes to the region’s infrastructural and residential development.

The Chéticamp region has a diversified economy where the primary (especially fisheries), secondary, and tertiary sectors complement each other to support the economic vitality of this dynamic Acadian community.

Chéticamp is a region with a wealth of economic and cultural opportunities.
