What is a Welcoming Francophone Community?
A Welcoming Francophone Community is:
- a friendly place where the integration of French-speaking newcomers is a priority
- a network of 24 towns and regions throughout Canada where French-language identity and culture is celebrated
- a community where newcomers receive help that makes them feel at home
- a project supported by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada
The Chéticamp region was recently named a Welcoming Francophone Community!
Why is the Chéticamp region a Welcoming Francophone Community?
According to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada’s five criteria, the Chéticamp region is a Welcoming Francophone Community because it:
- demonstrates inclusive leadership and promotes diversity. Chéticamp is proud of its bilingualism and its Acadian heritage, in addition to being “dynamic, modern and multicultural.”
- provides fair access to important services, which welcomes newcomers. The presence of the Sacred Heart Community Health Centre) and École NDA which both provide services in French and guarantee access to essential services in the community’s language. The availability of community services and modern facilities facilitates the settlement of newcomers. The presence of the early years centre Les Petits Poussins within École NDA, as well as two private daycares, demonstrates a willingness to welcome families.
- invests in economic development, entrepreneurship and employment. The local economy, based on tourism and fishing, provides employment opportunities. The fact that Chéticamp has attracted several entrepreneurs and developed more than 70 companies reflects a favourable economic environment (Click here to access the business directory) Recognizing and promoting the expertise of new residents and their contributions to job creation and workforce expansion emphasize the community’s openness. Ongoing residential development and commercial construction are signs of economic vitality and openness to newcomers.
